Each year many people fail to prepare in time for Christmas resulting in last minute panics and shopping till late hours. Many carry on this trend year after year and fail to recognize how to achieve a single Christmas period that is stress fear and one that can be relaxed and enjoyed. It can come down to many things, either laziness or lack of preparation.

If you are looking for that helping hand this year and looking for some useful tips to help get organized for this Christmas then look no further. With a little help you may surprise yourself and other and clear the way for a much more organized and structured festival holiday.

The first decision that must be made is when to begin? Many people who enjoy being ahead will begin shopping around September and October. This will ensure that by December there is no chance of being caught up in the busy shopping that is created around every shopping centre. It will also highly depend on the amount of gifts that are required.

A budget must be selected and stuck with. With many people having difficulties with the last few years it’s understandable that less is spent than normal but again this will be down to individual circumstances. By creating a list of everyone that is to receive a gift and place a price next to each can help create a realistic and comparable price list and total that is affordable and something to remind you of the limit set. Another way of spending wisely is to spread the spending out throughout several months therefore not allowing in December to have no money because everything was bought last minute. Another benefit of making an early start is the ability to shop online and make great savings and not worry about anything being sold out or being delivered late.

Lastly, try buying for families and friends as a group. Instead of buying individual gifts try selecting a gift that can be shared by all and can help reduce the amount of gifts and the overall cost. It can be the quantity of gifts required for all family and friends families that makes Christmas shopping such a time consuming challenge. Try buying christmas food hampers or gift boxes full of treats that can be tailor made and include a personal touch that mirrors the festival spirit of family and sharing. Using several of these but tailored to each family or friend will help not only reduce the time looking for presents but by spending the allocated cost at a total than individually can ensure that the hamper will be very luxurious.

Although these are very simple steps, sticking to them and having self discipline can make sure that come December and possibly even November you can relax and spend the festive season with your family and loved ones relaxing.

Christmas morning is always a magical time, and one aspect that is forever in the hearts of children and parents alike is the Christmas stockings. Every year, children rush downstairs, eager to see if they have received candy and presents in their stocking or if Santa has filled it with coal. In picking out Christmas stockings for your family, you want to be sure that each one reflects the personality of the owner, while adding to the festivity of your household. Here are some ideas to help you choose the perfect Christmas stocking for each member of your family:

You may wish to choose a theme for the stockings.

Does everyone have a favorite reindeer from Rudolph or character from Frosty the Snowman? If so, you can purchase stockings containing these designs or even buy patterns to make your own, and allow children to add decals to further personalize their stockings. Another idea for themed stockings is to pick a Christmas character, such as an angel or snowman, and allow each person to decorate their own stocking using this character as the centerpiece. To see how your children have grown and changed from year to year, consider choosing a new theme every couple of years and hanging older stockings throughout the house during the Christmas season.

Create personalized stockings with individual’s names.

Have each of your family members pick out a stocking in their favorite color and line the top with white velvet. Then, write each person’s name along the top. You can purchase solid colored stockings in a variety of sizes at many local stores, or you can make them yourself using material from a craft store. Children may wish to add designs that are important to them, such as a football or set of ballet shoes. If you have a family pet, the children may enjoy decorating a stocking for the cat or dog. You may even encourage them to buy small toys or treats for the pet to put in the stocking on Christmas Eve.

Remember that stockings can add to the decorative nature of your home.

If you use certain colors throughout your other Christmas decorations, such as green, red, and gold, then you may wish to include these in your stockings. You may also want to have a set of stockings that hang from the fireplace mantle throughout the Christmas season and a second set that gets hung solely for Christmas Eve.

Decorating your home for Christmas can be fun but it can also turn disastrous because it consumes time and money, and it may even cause a fuss. Here are several tricks you can do to make your Christmas home decorating easier and cheaper yet still enjoyable.

1. Hang wreaths on all doors and front windows

If you are a creative kind of person, you can make your own wreaths using all sorts of elements around you. Pine cones, holly leaves, cinnamon barks, bows, flowers, small bags of potpourri, baubles, candy, or perhaps berries are inexpensive and you can easily find them everywhere. They also make your wreaths unique and cheerful. Unfortunately, some of the materials are not meant to be kept for long-term storage. It is great if you have artificial wreaths which can be stored and reused for future Christmases. You can redecorate them every year to get a different look.

2. Place ribbons in every corner of your house

Ribbons tied into bows can add a cheerful mood to your home. Tie bows on your dining chairs and table, stairways, plants inside and outside the house, silverware, or anywhere you can think of. Red and green are the basic Christmas colors, but you can use others as well. Gold, silver, as well as floral patterned ribbons work well for creating a festive ambiance. Untie the bows and store the ribbons properly after the holiday is over so that you can use them again for future celebrations.

3. Install colorful lights to enliven the mood

You can create a more festive mood by putting on some colorful lights, whatever your home design style is. Christmas lights come in many shapes and colors. Combine icicle lights, string lights, rope lights, garland lights, or net lights for indoor and outdoor decoration. To save the energy, choose LED lights for your home. They can save up to 90% of energy compared to conventional lighting. LED lights can be used for up to 200,000 hours and they save you a lot of money.

4. Let music fill the air

Play your Christmas CD collections on your stereo set. Although most Christmas songs might not be altered much for several decades, you can never get bored of them. Many versions of Christmas songs are available to create different moods for different occasions. Cheerful, upbeat songs are perfect for children or welcoming guests. On the other hand, classic jazzy tunes by Bing Crosby, Andy Williams, Nat King Cole, or Frank Sinatra elicit the romantic and nostalgic atmospheres of Christmas evenings.

Candles at Christmas are popularly used for decorating homes and outdoors. It is said that Martin Luther King was the first person to decorate a Christmas tree with candles. So, those who are doing it are basically following an old tradition of using Christmas candles. Christmas Candles are a good option to give as gifts to acquaintances, colleagues and other from whom you do not want to spend too much money.

This Christmas make sure that you use candles to decorate your home. If you are adopting a color theme for your Christmas decorations, get candles in that color. Take a crystal bowl and fill it up with water. Drop in a few flower petals, if available. Next, put in floating candles and light it up. The floating candles will not only give a soft hue to the room, but also decorates your table attractively.

Handmade Christmas candles

Just make sure to switch off the light bulbs, when you are using candles. The muted light gives a wonderful view to the house and room.

The Symbolism of candles during the holiday season

Since the very early days, Christmas candles have symbolized the victory of light over darkness. Candles have always been used by people at home, in churches and for decorating during festivals among other things. Candles have also been given as gifts to ward off darkness. During the Roman festival of Saturnalia, candles were used for the first time. Candles were also used by pagans during Yule celebrations. Bonfires and candles were lit bid farewell to the last season and welcome the new one.

With the spread of Christianity candles started to find a prominent place in the celebrations. They were placed in window sill to guide baby Jesus as he walked from house to house on Christmas Eve. Some countries have their own traditions associated with candles, and they are still followed. In Sweden, the youngest girl of the family wears or carries a crown made of small lit tapers. During Victorian times, candles were used to decorate Christmas trees.

In present day celebrations, Christmas candles find a prominent place. However, candles have undergone a sea change in terms of the shape, size, type, color and ingredients used for manufacturing. You can find scented candles where spices like gingerbread, cinnamon, pine, rose are some of the popular scents used. Christmas is almost around the corner. Each year the music on the radio starts earlier and also the new items for the season seem to sell out so quickly. Here are some ways to prepare ahead of time.

1) Are you planning to have people over or attend a gathering out of the area? Now is the time to look into flight costs and reserve them. If you need time off from work, ask now. Don’t wait till November because your boss may not give you the vacation time as there will be too many people out of the office.

2) What are some gifts your family and friends would find meaningful? By observing the taste of your family members and friends you’ll get some ideas. What kind of music do they like? What do they speak about as the best part of their weekends. This can help you think out something beyond the typical tie or boring gift item. Do you have photos that you can put together into a scrapbook, online video or another form? Pick something for someone that will have value to them and you can do this by really observing their interests over the next few months.

3) Meal planning around the holidays is also important. You can apply some of the ideas from the above section as well into planning out meals. Do you know if there are foods that cause allergic reactions that you shouldn’t be serving? Does someone you care about dislike certain spices? Sometimes a meal can be delicious but if the spice is disliked (such as rosemary) the kids won’t eat the chicken. I’ve observed this in my own family.

4) In terms of gifts, aside from the newest and popular video games which need often to be ordered right away, look into educational gifts as well. For younger kids there are lots of dvds that teach various skills and are fun at the same time.

5) Don’t forget that decorating the house is a lot of fun. Take time to do this with the kids and adding in some inflatable items are great for pictures and hugging.

Waiting till the last minute creates problems in making travel plans, picking appropriate gifts as well as having a relaxed and joyous holiday. Taking the time to prepare ahead of time enables the best outcome for an important time of a year.

My family has a Christmas Eve tradition that has been going on for generations. Since my kids were born (and as my Mom did for me, and her Mom did for her, etc.), each Christmas Eve I give them a Christmas tree ornament that is reflective of their interests or experiences during the year. As they leave home, get married and start a family, they already have a whole set of ornaments that have some family history to them and tell a story.

This has resulted in some very unique Christmas ornaments on my tree! Over the years, we’ve had pink flamingos, lots and lots of purple ornaments, and tons of shoe and purse ornaments. My son’s ornaments are pretty boyish with lots of soccer, basketball, cars and trains.

Our family has always opened Christmas gifts on Christmas morning, so the ornament exchange was a nice way of kicking off the holiday by opening a gift on Christmas Eve. As the kids (and guests) come to the dinner table, each place setting is adorned with their beautifully wrapped ornament from Mom and Dad. The center of the table holds a large basket that everyone puts their wrapped ornaments for the others in. So they become multi-functional as well — gifts AND a centerpiece!

As you start thinking about what ornaments you would like to get, just be sure that they are reflective of the person’s personality, hobbies or tastes. Make it special, and make it unique. Your children will be sure to thank you when they go off on their own.

Sci-Fi Christmas Ornaments
Aliens and martians and spaceships — oh my! If you’ve got a sci-fi addict on your list, you’re in luck. You should be able to find a host of Star Trek, Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica ornaments available. For the younger set, think Marvin the Martian, ray guns, aliens and spaceships.
